NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 Launches With 2nd-Gen Transformer Model and 6X Frame Generation

NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 upgrades Super Resolution with a 2nd-gen transformer model and introduces Dynamic and 6X Multi Frame Generation.

NVIDIA has officially unveiled DLSS 4.5, a major update to its AI-powered rendering stack that delivers improved image quality and higher performance through a second-generation transformer model and expanded Multi Frame Generation features.

First introduced at CES 2025, DLSS 4 quickly became NVIDIA’s fastest-adopted gaming technology, now supported in over 250 games and applications. With DLSS 4.5, NVIDIA is extending support to over 400 titles, while raising both visual fidelity and frame generation scalability across GeForce RTX GPUs.

Second-Gen Transformer Model Improves Image Quality

At the core of DLSS 4.5 is a 2nd-generation transformer-based Super Resolution model, representing the first major architectural upgrade since DLSS transitioned away from CNNs. The new model uses five times the compute of the original transformer and is trained on a significantly expanded, higher-fidelity dataset.

Unlike previous approaches that relied on logarithmic-space processing to suppress flicker, which often mutes highlights and crushing shadows, DLSS 4.5 operates directly in linear space, matching the game engine’s native ground truth. This allows lighting, reflections, and high-contrast details to retain physical accuracy while improving motion clarity.

In practice, NVIDIA says this results in:

• Sharper edges and improved anti-aliasing
• Reduced ghosting in fast motion
• Stronger temporal stability
• Better lighting accuracy in high-contrast scenes

The largest gains are seen in Performance and Ultra Performance modes, where the new transformer model can match, or even surpass native image quality while rendering far fewer pixels.

Optimized for RTX 40 and 50 Series GPUs

DLSS 4.5 takes advantage of faster Tensor Cores in GeForce RTX 40 and 50 Series GPUs, leveraging FP8 precision to double inference throughput. This enables the more advanced transformer model to run with only a minor performance cost compared to the original.

NVIDIA says that the GeForce RTX 20 and 30 Series GPUs remain supported, though without native FP8 acceleration. On those cards, the new Model M and Model L presets may carry a higher performance impact, making the previous DLSS 4.0 Model K a better balance for some users.

6X Multi Frame Generation Pushes Frame Rates Further

DLSS 4.5 introduces a new 6X Multi Frame Generation mode, allowing up to five AI-generated frames for every traditionally rendered frame. Combined with DLSS Super Resolution, this enables performance scaling up to the refresh rate of the display, unlocking 240Hz and 360Hz gaming even with path tracing enabled on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs.

NVIDIA claims the jump from 4X to 6X Multi Frame Generation can boost 4K path-traced performance by up to 35%. NVIDIA Reflex is used alongside frame generation to minimize latency and preserve responsiveness.

The updated Frame Generation model also improves in-game UI clarity, reducing artifacts in static elements such as minimaps and HUDs in titles including The Outer Worlds 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Starfield.

Dynamic Multi Frame Generation Adapts in Real Time

New to DLSS 4.5 is Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, which dynamically adjusts the frame generation multiplier based on workload and display refresh rate. Rather than locking into a fixed multiplier, the system scales frame generation up or down to maintain smooth performance while avoiding unnecessary latency or image degradation.

NVIDIA describes the system as functioning like an automatic transmission for the GPU, adapting in real time to maximize smoothness on displays ranging from 120Hz to 240Hz and beyond.

Availability and How to Upgrade

DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution is available now via the latest NVIDIA app beta, allowing all GeForce RTX users to upgrade supported games through DLSS Overrides. A full NVIDIA app release is scheduled for January 13, 2026.

Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X Multi Frame Generation will launch this Spring, exclusive to GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, across more than 250 games and apps.
