Packaging
The Revolver S follows the traditional packaging in the
lineup, all dressed up in black and red. It’s quite the familiar box design
presented in HyperX’s offerings – engaging and edgy by design, but bulky and
heavy in form.
Pop it out and open and you’ll be met with the inclusions in
the Revolver S that’s protected by a thin sheet of foam. Basically, think the standard Cloud Revolver, albeit with a USB sound card audio control box to make it more
special. Other than that, there’s, of course, the Cloud Revolver S, standard
documentations, a flexible microphone similar to what the Cloud Revolver
featured, and an extension cable for PC, which you may not be using plenty of
times.
Unfortunately, it’s still missing extra earpads and a carrying
bag that we had wanted to see since the standard Cloud Revolver. Something like
this would need extra care, so a bag or headset hanger would have easily
helped.
Design
In essence, the Revolver S carries the very same form factor
of the standard Cloud Revolver. However, there are a few definitive changes to
improve on the overall design and build quality, and we’re liking them.
First off, the Cloud Revolver S features a suspension-type
metal frame for its comfort and durability. It’s still super light at 376g with
the microphone attached, and its clamping force is just light enough to keep
your ears secured to the cups without it falling on you.
A we’ve said earlier, we’re really digging the material
upgrade here. Instead of glossy branding and rough plastic build, the Cloud
Revolver S features some nice soft touch plastic with black matte finish and a
more undertoned branding design that looks downright edgy and minimalistic. The
addition of rubber tips on the frame also add up some flare into it, and it
makes the design more complete than the standard Cloud Revolver. There are still some glossy parts like the rim of the outer ear cups, but nothing too gaudy.
When it comes to the build quality, the Cloud Revolver S
feels every bit as durable, especially with the choice of materials the company
made here. Its metal frame is a testament to its sturdiness, and the soft touch plastic make it less prone
to abrasions. Do note that, as with any consumer electronics devices, you’ll
still want to handle it with care. Wear and tear is expected, but daily use won’t
be a problem with it.
About the earcups, the Cloud Revolver S also ships with only
its leatherette memory foam. It’s comfortable at best, and it only becomes
somewhat warm after a couple of hours continuously playing games or listening
with it. Where are those velour earpads now?
We’re glad that the Cloud Revolver S kept the microphone the
standard variant came in. We’re going for minimalistic, and this one does it greatly.
You can take it out as you wish if you want to simply use it outside, but a
gaming headset of this size and design would probably be too much in a crowded
space.
Performance
Now, there are several factors that determine the audio
quality on specific equipment. However, the Cloud Revolver S can keep it
standardized with its USB Plug N Play Dolby Surround control box. Dolby’s name
drives the Cloud Revolver S’ feature pack stronger than its predecessors. There
are some neat tricks into it, allowing you to select certain EQ presets to get
just the right sound balance without having too much work to go through.
Gaming
Our test procedures for the Cloud Revolver S involves
immersive games and eSports titles. For the best experience, we set out with
playing Resident Evil 7 with Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound on. The volume levels are
definitely up there, while directional noise is also on point with its rich and
textured sounds, greatly adding to the total immersion. It’s an addictive
sensory treat, and would have helped further if we had VR with us.
For our Overwatch Competitive Play matches, the audio field
easily sounded expanded, and the 7.1 virtual surround sound greatly helped us
get a leg up on our games. You may find some trouble in discerning which audio
channels the sounds are coming from, but it’s great as it gives you an idea of the
locations of shots and explosions.
Music
When it comes to music playback, you may not want to settle
on just switching Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound on, since you’ll be given several EQ
options such as Vocals, Flat, and Bass Boost. But to give you a rough idea,
switching Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound gives some depth and increase volume levels
into your tracks, but with some of the channels being muddled down. And on that
note, experimenting on which EQ preset to use is fun and all.
Conclusion
To put it simply, the HyperX Cloud Revolver S is version 2.0
of an original that has already been proven itself as a well-rounded
gaming-centric headset. Its better build quality and design are definitely a step up, and its better audio performance even more so. Top it off with Dolby’s
name as its driving force to further up its game has certainly added up to its
caliber.
On that note, that also put the Cloud Revolver S in a price
premium. Justified, however, given
with the audio performance, features, and build quality it’s currently
presented at. For Php 7,500, the HyperX Cloud Revolver S is definitely one of
the most affordable and feature packed headsets in its price category. It's definitely one we can recommend.
