We're here to try out the KontrolFreek FPS Freek Galaxy thumbgrips. Does it really improve your aim?

So, here we are starting 2022 with a simple and straightforward unboxing and review of an accessory. Way to start a year, am I right? Well, we’ve received a sample of the KontrolFreek FPS Freek Galaxy – a set of thumbgrips designed to improve your accuracy and comfort with a joystick. And that’s what we’re going to take a look at today.

UNBOXING

You can’t really call this as a box.  The KontrolFreek FPS Freek Galaxy comes in a simple blister pack that basically lets you know what you can expect from it from the prints around the carton. The thumbgrips themselves are inside a plastic pack that comes with a cutout to let you check its texture.

 

DESIGN

These

KontrolFreek FPS Freek Galaxy thumbgrips are essentially built with rubber and plastic. KontrolFreek indicates that it’s a proprietary rubber compound that enhances grip, comfort, and reduces slip. Both thumbgrips feature concave shapes and have a laser etched design, but a thing to note is that the right side is taller than the left. Probably for more precision in control by the look of it.

There’s one problem I’m seeing here when I connected it to my DualShock 4. The plastic grips that you use to attach it to your default thumbsticks get mangled when I installed them. I’m not sure if I it was a mistake on my part. 

PERFORMANCE

Fancy that. It works on my Gulikit NS08 Kingkong Controller

There’s really no way to metrically measure the performance here, and for the most part this is going to be subjective. But to at least illustrate my experience thus far, these thumbgrips can offer more precise control. With the thumbgrip on the right analog stick, it being higher offered more control since there’s more arc to work around giving you more motion range, not to mention the grip. 

Without the additional height, you have additional way of controlling how the stick moves. For example, if you need a more precise aim and you need to target quick, you’ll find yourself fumbling a lot of times to shoot your shot at the right target. Now, given the better control offered with this thumbgrip, it’s a whole lot easier. By the way, I’m left-handed, but I have played a lot of first person and third person shooting games on consoles since the PS2 days. 

CONCLUSION

It’s hard to draw a conclusion on something subjective. Or maybe it’s not subjective, it’s just that there are so many variables that I need to factor in for a more conclusive result. But yeah to sum it up, have you ever upgraded to a bigger monitor and then afterwards tried to use the old one? The difference is very noticeable, and you’ll get used to any given some time. But then again, the difference is there. Frankly, I can't see myself using a controller without these. It just feels weird.
