AMD Tracks Ahead of Rack-Scale AI Energy-Efficiency Goal

AMD reaches 4x AI energy-efficiency gains by 2026, advancing toward its 2030 goal of 20x greater rack-scale efficiency.

AMD has achieved an estimated 4x increase in AI energy efficiency as of mid-2026, putting the company ahead of its projected pace toward its 2030 goal of delivering a 20x improvement in rack-scale energy efficiency for AI training and inference.

The milestone reflects AMD's efforts across silicon, systems, networking and software as demand for AI compute continues to accelerate. By improving performance per watt across the full infrastructure stack, AMD aims to help customers scale AI workloads while managing the growing power, cooling and operating costs associated with increasingly large deployments.

AMD Reaches 4x AI Energy-Efficiency Improvement

AMD estimates that its AI energy efficiency has improved by 4x between 2024 and mid-2026. The company says this is ahead of its projected 3x improvement for this stage and more than twice the historical trendline for the same period.

The progress puts AMD on a stronger trajectory toward its 2030 target of a 20x increase in rack-scale energy efficiency for AI training and inference.

“The next wave of AI efficiency will depend on tighter co-optimization across compute silicon, memory, interconnects, software and rack-scale system design. Our estimated 4x improvement through 2026 reflects the strength of our approach and the progress AMD is making across the full system, putting us ahead of our projected pace toward the 2030 goal,” said Sam Naffziger, senior vice president and Corporate Fellow at AMD.

Why Rack-Scale Efficiency Matters

AI compute requirements are growing rapidly, increasing the demands placed on data center infrastructure. As workloads scale, improving efficiency requires more than simply increasing the performance of individual processors or accelerators.

CPUs, GPUs, memory, networking, software, power delivery and cooling all contribute to the efficiency of a modern AI system. Optimizing these components together at the rack and data center level can allow customers to deliver more useful compute without increasing energy consumption at the same rate.

For data center operators, greater efficiency can also translate into lower electricity consumption, improved total cost of ownership and greater flexibility when power and cooling capacity become limiting factors.

Two Paths Toward 20x Greater Efficiency

AMD's projected 2030 gains are based on a representative AI training workload and can translate into two potential outcomes.

One approach is to deliver the same amount of compute using fewer resources. Under AMD's projection, approximately two AMD racks in 2030 could provide the same compute capability as 570 racks from 2024. This could enable a 20x reduction in use-phase electricity consumption while reducing carbon intensity by 28x.

Alternatively, the same energy budget could be used to deliver 20x more compute, measured in floating-point operations per second (FLOPs) per watt.

These scenarios illustrate how improvements in performance per watt can affect both the physical scale and operating requirements of future AI infrastructure.

Efficiency Starts Across the Full AI Stack

AMD is targeting efficiency improvements across multiple layers of its AI platform, including compute architecture, process technology, memory bandwidth, data movement, interconnects, software and system-level co-design.

As AI infrastructure expands from individual systems to complete racks, overall efficiency increasingly depends on how effectively different components operate together. AMD's system-level approach is intended to reduce bottlenecks, improve data movement and increase performance per watt across the platform rather than optimizing individual components in isolation.

Compute, Memory and Interconnects Drive Performance

Beyond software optimization, AMD identifies three fundamental factors behind AI system performance: compute capability, memory bandwidth and interconnect bandwidth.

Advances in semiconductor process technology and processor architecture can increase floating-point performance per watt, while improvements in memory architecture and integration can provide greater bandwidth. High-speed interconnects can further improve how efficiently data moves between processors and other system components.

AMD expects these combined improvements to contribute to its goal of delivering 20x more AI performance per watt by 2030 compared with 2024.

Memory Bandwidth Becomes Increasingly Important

Modern AI workloads require enormous amounts of data to move between compute and memory. Increasing memory bandwidth, bandwidth density and bandwidth per watt can help keep compute resources supplied with data while reducing inefficient movement.

High-bandwidth memory, larger caches and tighter integration between memory and compute can reduce unnecessary data transfers. This becomes increasingly important as AI models grow in size and complexity, since moving data can consume a significant amount of energy across a large-scale system.

High-Speed Interconnects Help Scale AI

Interconnect technology is another critical part of efficient AI infrastructure. Larger AI models and increasingly distributed workloads rely on efficient communication between GPUs, CPUs and other components throughout the system.

High-speed scale-up interconnects can help reduce communication bottlenecks and allow larger systems to exchange data more efficiently. At rack scale, these improvements can contribute to both higher performance and better energy efficiency across the overall infrastructure.

Software Completes the Efficiency Equation

While hardware provides the foundation, software plays an important role in extracting additional efficiency from AI infrastructure. AMD's ROCm™ software stack, together with open standards and collaboration with customers, is designed to help developers optimize AI workloads for AMD platforms.

Open software ecosystems can also enable broader optimization across AI and high-performance computing (HPC) deployments, helping organizations improve the efficiency of both large-scale training and inference workloads.

As inference workloads continue to grow, reducing the energy required for each generated token while maintaining throughput will become increasingly important for operators deploying AI at scale.

For AI and HPC customers, the objective is ultimately to extract more useful compute from the energy and infrastructure available.

AMD's projected rack-scale efficiency improvements could help customers reduce operational electricity consumption while easing pressure on power and cooling infrastructure.
